2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition

I am test driving the 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition a new 2020 trim model special edition new in the 86 family.

As the speed raises when inside the Hakone you can feel how the strong 205 HP engine could make the wheels run on fire, especially at a top speed of 140 MPH

Driving through fast highways in Florida is a pleasure when you are riding the 86 Hakone.  It is compact, sporty, easy to maneuver, and very fast!  The speed limit on the highway is the only reason not to keep pushing the accelerator when driving this great classic remake. Sports car architecture, good comfort, and modern performance merge together in the 2020 Toyota 86.

The 86 was launched by Toyota back in 2012, as a result of a joint development between Toyota and Subaru. The Toyota 86 was created based on three concepts:

  • rear-wheel drive
  • no turbocharging, and
  • be able to use ordinary tires

The goal was accomplished and Japanese car engineers gave birth to the new 86.  As part of this development, Subaru created the Subaru BRZ with some similar capabilities to the Toyota 86.

Hakone Edition Inspired in the Legendary Hakone Turnpike in Japan

The new 86 Hakone Edition is based on the 86 GT Trim, the Hakone name is inspired by the scenic two-lane Hakone Turnpike starting about two hours southwest of Tokyo, Japan.

The Hakone highway takes drivers through nine miles of a green mountain forest road, in an area surrounded by several intercrossing similar roads. This green forest has been the inspiration for creating the Hakone in Green paint color.

The Fast 86 Hakone Edition is available with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission, in my case I enjoyed the manual transmission, allowing me to control and push further the shifting of speeds.  Even if the 86 Hakone is a fast sports car, it brings good fuel economy at 24 MPG average.

The 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone is a very attractive 2+2 coupe sports car that uses rear-wheel drive, helping with maneuvering and drifting. The 86 is a great car to take your friends on fast rides onboard the 86, it is fun to drive! and safe too with several safety features.

The 86 GT sporty exterior design will impress anybody on the road, but you don’t need to spend a fortune to buy it. Automakers like Toyota are offering great value at low cost. You can enjoy a new Toyota 86 Hakone for less than $30,000. This is a great deal, for this type of car!

Trims and Pricing for the Toyota 86 Hakone Edition

The Toyota 86 is a dream come true for drivers who want to purchase a sporty car with room for four passengers, a very attractive look, and a fast loud engine.   The low pricing allows buyers to spend less than $30K for a completely new Toyota 86.

Toyota wants to provide owners the option to customize their 86 in a creative way, something that most sports car owners look for when purchasing this type of fast car, offering a few trim models, packages, and options based on new buyers’ needs but also due to the type of mechanical components that can be easily customized post-purchase.

The 86′ trim Hakone Edition was released in 2020.

  • 2020 Toyota 86
    Starting at $27,060 MSRP
  • 2020 Toyota 86 GT

The 86 GT Trim upgrades the Toyota 86 from a race track sports car into a grand touring.

The GT trim features heated front seats with leather-trimmed side bolsters, contrast stitching, dual-zone climate control, and aerodynamic features. The 86 Hakone is a special edition now in 2020, based on the GT Trim.

Engine and Performance

The 86 Hakone is a real sports car with a high-tech boxer engine delivering an impressive 205 horsepower and 156 lb.-ft. of torque in manual transmission versions. The 86 model is very fast and powerful. Is not a car for everyone, but those who like this type of car will fall in love with the Toyota 86.

To enhance the power the close-ratio 6-speed transmission gives you total control over the changes of speeds, especially in corners, curves, and frequent stops in the road. You can speed up in a matter of seconds, stop, and go again.

Great fuel economy at 24 MPG average on the manual transmission and 27 MPG average on the automatic transmission. The Toyota 86 is a great value. Pay less for gas and pay lesspurchasing price compared to other sports car.

The 86′ transmission works with triple-cone synchromesh on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears, and a ball-bearing-mounted shift linkage producing great durability,

Exterior Style

The 86 is aerodynamic and stylish with a very low roof height, flowing front fenders, and a cool sleek profile. Bronze-colored 17-in. twisted-spoke alloy wheels and matte-black spoiler match with the deep green exterior color.

Interior style

The 2+2 design includes two regular seats in the front and two small rear seats for smaller passengers in the back.

Heated sport front bucket seats with tan leather bolsters and black Alcantara suede-like inserts with black contrast stitching create a striking yet elegant cockpit.

I love the Hakone having seats for 4 people. Drivers like me who have children can use their 86 on the fast highway when driving alone, but also can enjoy family daily driving to take children to school and impress everyone driting through the school’s car-rider-line with the 86 impressive sports design.

The rear seats are very small, but here are two complete sets of rear-seat latch connectors allowing you to bring your children onboard using a child car seat.

Exclusive Hakone Edition features include a black sliding armrest with tan trim and black stitching

  • A nice tan Toyota 86 logo is embroidered on the passenger-side dashboard
  • The leather-trimmed steering wheel and leather-wrapped parking brake handle cover and shift boot all feature tan contrast stitching.
  • The steering wheel, parking brake cover, and shift boot all feature tan stitching, as well
  • Heated seats and Tan leather-trimmed bolsters.

Folding down the rear seat opens up to a larger cargo area. For track racing lovers, this cargo space can be used for an extra set of wheels and tires.

The modern 7-inch multimedia display comes standard with Android Auto compatibility and Apple CarPlay something that still today many other cars don’t have.

Safety Features

The 86 is equipped with lots of standard safety technologies for a safe fast ride.

  • A standard auto-dimming rearview mirror with an integrated backup camera helps you see the rear of the 86 while backing up

Standard Star Safety System Features:

  • Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
